The basic entry standard for AA squad is the attainment of Age Group and Senior
National standard time. The aims of AA squad are to further develop
swimmers technique, stamina and speed by means of additional training sessions and programmes suited to individual swimmers
needs and to encourage the swimmer to take part in the National championships and at International level. Dry-land conditioning and flexibility exercises are utilised together with individual weights
programmes for swimmers.
International Events City of Newcastle had 3 swimmers swimming for Great Britain at the European
Championships this year. At the
Swimming Championships held in Prague Jessica Thielmann just missed out on a medal in the 1500m Freestyle when she finished
4th in 16.42.49. She was in 3rd
place at the 1000m mark. Jess s the 1st
GB swimmer home as she was in the 800m Freestyle where she finished 9th
in 8.49.78. Jess also swam in the 400m Freestyle. Laura Dawson also represented GB at these Championships
swimming in the 100m and 50m Butterfly. Ian Oliver was part of the British Coaching Team at the event.
Kayleigh Dawson represented Great Britain
at the European Junior Open Water Championships in Croatia
where she came 6th in a blanket finish.
She was also the 2nd British girl home and now qualifies for
World Class Open Water funding.
Tri Nations Crystal Palace 1-2 August 2009. The Club has 4 swimmers in the Great
Britain Team
for the Tri Nations International between Great Britain Canada and Russia. Paul Robinson has been selected for his first International after 2 years in the City club. He is joined in the GB Team by Rachel Haigh, who lasted represented GB at The World Youth Games in 2008
, plus the two European Junior Championships swimmers Jessica Thielmann and Laura Dawson. All will swim at the ASA National Championships at Sheffield and move onto the International
at Crystal Palace.

Squad Coach
Ian Oliver Head Coach Ian Oliver was the club's first Head
Coach from his appointment to the city in 1987 through to 1988 and his elevation to direct and coach the ASGFB Regional performance
Centre. Ian has coached British Teams at various levels since 1980 and twice has been a member of England's Commonweath
Games Staff. In 2000 Ian was a member of the Sydney Olympic Games coaching staff. Since 2001 Ian has coached Great
